Research

Our research tackles the fundamentals of multi-phase flow in porous media. We analyze the fundamentals of flow in the micro and continuum scale in porous media. Below are some of the highlights of our research.

Spontaneous Imbibition Research

Wettability Research

Wettability is one of the focused areas in our research. More specifically, we focus on capillary trapping under water-wet, neutral-wet, mixed-wet, and oil-wet with applications for both carbon dioxide sequestration and improved oil recovery. In addition, we conduct static contact angle measurements along with Amott Index to quantify the wettability of our cores. We alter the wettability of these cores either by using organic acids at ambient conditions or crude oil at high temperatures.

For spontaneous imbibition we aim to characterize the rock using a simple experiment. Moreover, we used computerized tomography (CT) to monitor the saturation distribution in the reservoir across the core. The saturation advancement is a function of capillary pressure and relative permeability and we incorporate the analytical solution derived by Schmid et al. 2011 to estimate these parameters.

Pore-scale Imaging and Modelling Research

In pore-scale imaging and modelling, we are mainly interested in visualizing saturation distribution across the core. Furthermore, we want to visualize residual saturation trapped  under capillary trapping under different wettability states. This is investigated using a custom made flow cell, imaged using micro and nano computerized tomography.
